Dr. Turman is a scholar, storyteller, and educator whose work explores the power of listening, cultural memory, and collective imagination in shaping more humane futures. A native of Albany, New York, she is a proud double graduate of Empire State University, where she earned both her BA and MA. She later received her Ph.D. from Union Institute & University. Her dissertation was nominated for the institution’s Distinguished Dissertation Award.

Her interdisciplinary work bridges African American history, Afrofuturism, and cultural storytelling, examining how listening to history and lived experience can help build more connected and equitable communities.

Dr. Turman serves on the faculty in the Writing and Critical Inquiry Program for the University at Albany. She is also a documentary filmmaker and creator of The Black Girl Project, an initiative amplifying the voices and experiences of Black women and girls.

Through her teaching, creative work, and public speaking, Dr. Turman encourages audiences to see listening as a powerful practice of attention, connection, and transformation.
